Storytelling in the New Media

By Jim Poage

October 4, 2016

I have been thinking again about the conference I attended last April, “Staying Savvy, Skilled, and Solvent in Journalism’s Wired Era,” at Boston University. This was the 18th Annual Narrative Journalism Conference on “The Power of Narrative.”

I have attended this conference over the years to learn to write in narrative nonfiction style. In this genre, the facts and data are not just reported but are told as a story using techniques from fiction such as setting a scene, using descriptive language, describing any characters that might be involved, and using dialog. Gradually, the conference has been moving to telling narratives in other media, and this year the swing was titanic—Facebook, Twitter, comics, radio, podcast.

In brief, Facebook is for short-form stories; Twitter is, of course, for very short stories (but you can still tell a story); comics can be short or long narratives but the sentences and thoughts need to be short to fit in the bubbles; and radio and podcasts need to be rich enough to stimulate the listener to fill in the details of the scene. Each media has its quirks that require story telling techniques to be successful.

But still a good story well told is at the heart of narratives in all media. Does the story convey the human condition and experience? Then we can experiment and learn what causes a good story to be well told in different media. We’ll explore this from time to time in future blogs.

Spotting Flair during Today’s Wanderings

By Jim Poage

March 9, 2016

A high of around 70 degrees was predicted today for Portsmouth, NH, for the day. While walking around, I decided to look for instances of flair – engaging design that at least evokes a smile if not a “wow.”
